Although other factors can contribute, when algae gets to be excessive there's a good chance the source of the problem is high nutrient loading. This can include run-off from parking lots to turf areas. Both areas can contain high concentrations of nutrients, especially phosphorus and nitrogen most commonly found in fertilizer. Through run-off, these extra nutrients are added to a pond which throws the natural ecosystem off balance forcing it to work extra hard in order to stabalize itself. Often an algal bloom occurs as the algae devour the abundant nutrients.
SOLUTION: Aerators encourage the longevity of aerobic bacteria by constantly inducing oxygen into the water. Since aerobic bacteria need an abundance of oxygen to consume excess nutrients in the water, aerators help by constantly replenishing their O2 supply. This in turn keeps your water clear, odor-free and healthy.
Did you know that in a single day a Canadian goose can produce over a pound of excrement, and that these geese also prefer to return to the same nesting site every year?
From their aggressive and sourly behavior, to the dreaded amount of rubbish they produce geese and waterfowl can be problematic. When molting in the first warm months of the year, feathers seem to be everywhere and what is even more exasperating is the great amount of excrement generated. Not only does this create a hazard where someone could slip and fall, research indicates that the droppings can contain harmful bacteria such as E. Coli, Giardia, Salmonella, and Chlamydiosis which can be tracked from outside to the indoors. In addition droppings can create high nutrient loading in the water column which effects were highlighted in the previous section.
SOLUTION: Surface spray aerators can discourage waterfowl as they help break up the landing patterns of larger flocks and help to deter the birds by eliminating a wide open landing area in a lake or pond. This tends to cause them to migrate elsewhere.
Did you know that one female mosquito is capable of spawning 3000 offspring in her lifetime, and that most mosquitoes remain within a mile radius of their breeding site?
During the warm months, nothing can be worse than having to swat away insects while trying to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors. While insects alone are irritating enough, now with the threat of West Nile Virus from mosquitoes, these little pests seem to have just become unbearable and dangerous. Water is a great attraction to most insects, mosquitoes in particular need water to thrive as they breed in stagnant water where there are aquatic weeds and scum to which they attach their eggs.
SOLUTION: Aerating fountains break up stagnant water conditions by pumping and circulating water in areas that would normally be still, thus inhibiting the insects' ability to properly nest and lay eggs or reproduce. In the chance that any eggs were already laid, by breaking up the surface water and constantly causing surface movement, aerators prevent any eggs or larvae from completing their life cycle. |
